I was looking forward to this wedding the moment I saw on the inquiry form that Jack and Madison were mostly interested in candids and wanted it to feel like an elopement but with people. Firelight Camps glamping wedding venue has been on my list since it opened and was the perfect location for an elopement esq festival vibe. Not only is it located a few miles past downtown Ithaca, it has its very own trail to Buttermilk Falls a popular waterfall in the finger lakes.
We started the day bypassing through the traditional getting ready photos. I actually have had a few weddings this year where my couples don’t want getting ready pictures. I help all of my couples with their timelines and what was most important to them was being together in nature, and so we started with a first look in the woods. We really lucked out and I would say that they got the prime time for the foliage, it was absolutely a breathtaking upstate New York fall day. We did a few portraits and then jumped right into the car for their private vow exchange at one of my favorite hidden waterfalls. I loved getting to help plan their day with them, including choosing the spot for their vows. It was private it was intimate and exactly what they wanted on their wedding day. Once we got back to firelight camps we got right into portraits with their bridal party and family. The best part about doing a first look is that you really do get to enjoy the whole day together with no time pressure after the ceremony. They did the damn thing, had their first kiss to The White Stripes, and partied the night away. They had a pizza bar, yummy vegan Hors D’oeuvres, and a creative and signature cocktails named after their cat. It was everything I love to photograph and more importantly they blazed a trail and did their day their own way.
